These strategies are integrated in the general design and implementation of activities and include;
Value Chain Analysis (VCA)
A systematic approach used at the project identification stage to determine
Entry points for different interventions
Justification for interventions
Implementation strategies
To supplement VCA, the project Cycle Management approach (PCM) is also integrated in its entirety.
Gatsby Business Clubs
The concept of Gatsby Business Clubs (GBCs) is based on clustering together of KGT producer beneficiaries into membership clubs. This concept has already been adopted by the 2 sister Gatsby Trusts in East Africa. KGT has developed a hybrid model of the concept whose basis is provision of services, rather than as peer pressure groups (a strategy used by micro finance institutions).
The broad objectives of Gatsby Business Clubs include:
- Propagating Good Business Practice for MSEs
- Encouraging peer support and interaction among MSEs
- Establishing institutional framework for continuous exchange of knowledge, ideas and information among MSEs and support organisations
- Ease impact assessment for interventions.
Through the GBCs, MSEs receive the following support:
- Continuous extension and mentorship services
- Access to credit, pre-order and Micro-leasing financing services
- Priority in linkages to premium buyers
- Continuous product design and development services through KGT’s pool of skilled designers
- Business incubation services
Hybrid Business Incubation
Given the vast geographical coverage of KGT’s clients, KGT has embraced the ‘Hybrid Incubator, (an integration of the Incubator-without-walls and the Virtual Incubator) strategy to ensure meaningful outreach. The strategies employed in developing and supporting business incubators are largely guided by KGT’s strategic focus and service areas. Other broad strategies include promotion of the MSE sector, pilot testing, MSE networking, value addition, entrepreneurship development, promotion of economic objectives, technology brokerage, environmental considerations, target group participation, self-sufficiency, and collaboration with other institutions.
Knowledge Management
A versatile Knowledge management (data base) system is utilised by KGT across all projects both for project management and specialized activities for instance quality tracking, production and sales tracking, baseline data storage and analysis etc. The data base system also supports internal monitoring of projects.
Additionally, the system’s robustness gives it a unique potential for commercialisation for use beyond KGT.
Gender mainstreaming
Our interventions pursue equal opportunities for women and men in project design, development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation. This way; we make gender equality a concrete reality in the lives of women and men creating space for everyone within the organisations as well as in communities we work with to contribute to the process of articulating a shared vision of sustainable human development and translating it into reality.
